The Door

“Be careful,” she said as I reached for the doorknob.

Confused, I turned to her and asked, “Be careful? I'm only going to start the car so the A/C can cool it down while we get ready to go. Why do I need to be careful?”

“Be careful opening the door. Stay behind the door and slowly sneak around it after you open it so the heat doesn't hit you too hard.” “That's ridiculous,” I replied as I turned back to the door. I pulled the door open and started to step forward, only to be slammed back two or three steps by a 117 degree wall of hot air. As I staggered back I pushed the door closed, or so I thought.

“See I told you,” is what I think she said then. With my vision blurred and my brain barely functioning I turned to her and murmured something like, “You were right, I should have listened.” “Be careful this time,” she said. “I will.”

With good vision and properly functioning brain I again turned to the door and stepped forward. With my right eye leading I slammed into the edge of the door I thought I had shut. Staggering backward, again, everything went black. With the neurons in my brain barely firing, I returned to consciousness. I was still on my feet.

I turned staggering to face her concerned, “Are you alright?” “I'm okay,” I think I mumbled.

That's when her laughter started. I was still so dazed I could hardly stand and she thought it was funny. Later I did, too. Then she said, “You're gonna have a real shiner. It's already turning black and blue.” “Really?” My brain was still trying to catch up.

Then, “Oh no, my parents are going to think I hit you.” “No they won't, I'll tell them what happened.” She laughed again, even with the worried look on her face. “They won't believe you.”

She was right. Not only did her parents think she hit me, my parents thought so, too. In fact, everybody thought she hit me. They all thought it was funny and wanted to know what I did to make her punch me in the eye. Nobody believed either of us when we told the truth.

Heat

Hot. The high today was supposed to be 113* F. My thermometer read 117.

My A/C quit working. Had to call the repairman. While waiting for him my dogs and I felt like we were baking. It got up to 97 inside the house.

The A/C is working now, but we are exhausted just enduring the heat.

Was going to write something else today but can't remember what. Maybe after my brain cools down. The temp inside the house is dropping steadily now that the A/C is working again.

Good & Bad

The bad news is that yesterday morning I found out the front tire on my motorcycle is flat! And with the battery in my truck already dead that means I had no transportation (my bicycle has a flat tire, too).

The good news is that my cousin brought me a new battery for my truck. So I have transportation again. Also my headache went away.

More bad news, my headache is back this morning.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my electric bill is double what it was last month. That's more than $100 more than I budgeted for. Well, I guess part of it will be late.

The heat is still with us. This has been the hottest July on record here in the Arizona desert. No wonder my electric bill is so high.

Have fun until I post again in a day or two.

Falling Apart

I have had a headache since Monday afternoon. I got it when riding my motorcycle back home from Casa Grande in 114 degreee weather. That's like being in a convection oven.

I was riding the motorcycle because the battery in my pickup truck is totally dead. I recharged it twice in a weeks time and it is still dead when I let it sit overnight. I will buy a new battery Saturday.

My refrigerator started sounding like it wants to explode last night. It still works but it is real noisy. I guess I'll have to get another one of those soon, too. This one is only about four years old. Bought it new when the last one quit.

The wind blew some shingles off my roof. Now I have to buy an extension ladder because I don't want to have to borrow one again. Some of the shingles that blew off were ones that I replaced a few years ago when the original ones blew off. When I can manage it I want to put a metal or fiberglass roof up there so I won't have to worry about it anymore.

I hate getting on the roof in these above 100 degree temps. It's like crawling into an oven.

Enough for now. I'll see if I can't come up with something more interesting next time.
